Vow Renewal

December 1 is the feast day of Blessed Charles de Foucauld. His spirituality of imitating the "hidden life" of Jesus of Nazareth is important to both the Little Sisters and the Joseph House. You can learn more about Charles at this link.

It is one of our traditions that the Little Sisters who have made final profession renew their vows on the feast day of Blessed Charles. We did this at the close of Evening Prayer on December 1.

Charles once wrote:
My Lord Jesus, You said, "There is no greater love than to lay down one's life for one's friends." With all my heart I want to give my life for You, I beg it of You earnestly. Nevertheless, not my will but Yours be done. I offer You my life, do with me whatever You want most.

A few hours before he was killed on December 1, 1916, Charles wrote in a letter:
The good God knows the sort of clay He has made us of, and He loves us more than a mother loves her child. He, the One who never dies, tells us He will never reject the one who comes to Him.

Please email us the names of those you would like us to remember in prayer: LSJM [at] comcast [dot] net

Volunteer Appreciation

"I get more from the Joseph House than I give."

That's what one of our volunteers said at the beginning of our Volunteer Appreciation Week.

We can never do enough for our volunteers, and each year we show our appreciation by providing breakfast for them at the Joseph House Crisis Center. One of our volunteers has been working at the Center since it opened in 1984 —  27 years ago! Others are closing in on 20 years of service. So many generous people have responded to the call to serve the poor and less fortunate among us. We value each and every one of them.

The highlight of the buffet table is always Sr. Connie's sausage gravy and biscuits. "This is the South," said a volunteer with a big smile.

We are happy they enjoy it, and we are happy that God never fails to send us such wonderful people to help care for His children in need.

We love getting to know our volunteers.

They are such a blessing to us and to the poor.

Many opportunities exist to volunteer at the Joseph House.

Garden Experiments

Continuing a Joseph House Workshop tradition, one of the current residents has started a vegetable and fruit garden. He decided to try something new this year and plant the garden in raised beds (which he made himself). This approach is making a big difference as everything is off to a good start.

When Sr. Marilyn brought over two cantaloupe seedlings, our gardener was initially unsure about how to plant them. "It's always an experiment," he said.

The other day, his eagle-eye spotted tiny watermelon vines growing wild in the yard, remnants of a garden from years past. They were soon replanted in their new home.

In addition to the melons, there's lettuce and several varieties of tomatoes growing, including purple ones. It's evident that every little sprout is being cared for.

The Workshop does a fantastic job of helping homeless men get back on their feet. Learn more about it.

45th Anniversary

May 1 was the 45th anniversary of the dedication of the first building known as "Joseph House."

The building was a row home on McCulloh Street in Baltimore that was donated rent-free by Mr. Arnold Kurland. Previously, the Joseph House ministry had been operating out of the rectory basement at Immaculate Conception Church at Mosher and Division Streets.

On the day of the dedication in 1966 (the feast of Saint Joseph the Worker), Msgr. Austin L. Healy, Archdiocesan Inner City director, officiated. The Rev. Kelly Jackson of Sharp Street Memorial Presbyterian Church gave the invocation. Cantor Maurice Miller from the Liberty Jewish Center chanted the closing benediction.

As it was described at the time, the purpose of the building was to serve as a center to "help area families with social, financial and moral difficulties, and work to develop sound family living and responsibility."

Forty-five years later, the mission continues. Thank You, Lord, for Your unfailing Providence! Help us to always be a faithful witness to the Gospel.

Good Saint Joseph, pray for us!

Remembering A Special Person

Virginia Layfield, a long-time friend and supporter of the Joseph House, died on March 10, 2011. She leaves behind an inspiring legacy of service to the community.

Her career in hospital administration at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, Maryland, lasted 43 years. She retired as the hospital's president in 1991. In 2008, the hospital named its new, state-of-the-art critical care facility the "Layfield Tower" in her honor. She received many other awards and accolades throughout her lifetime.

Sr. Mary Elizabeth and Virginia (1997).

Virginia was a good friend of our founder, Sr. Mary Elizabeth Gintling. They had several traits in common: a passion and drive to help others, a sense of humor, and a seemingly endless supply of good will.

Virginia was born on November 18, 1918. When asked about her age at her retirement, she smartly replied, "What am I supposed to tell you -- chronological age, psychological age, physiological age -- the average of all of them?"

She became president of the hospital during a divisive labor dispute. An editorial in the local newspaper (The Daily Times) praised her handling of the situation: "Under Layfield's guidance, [the hospital] began improving salaries and working conditions. Helping resolve the labor crisis and getting the hospital back on track was the final, critical act in an amazing career."

Virginia brought her vision and graciousness to many other organizations and projects, including Joseph House Village, which later became the Village of Hope. She served on the Board of Directors of the Village for a number of years. She was also involved with the Magi Fund that raises money for the Joseph House Crisis Center.

In a newspaper profile from 1995, Virginia stated her guiding philosophy: "Love God with all my heart and love my neighbor as myself."

We will miss her and pray that she now enjoys eternal rest with our Lord.

The Garden of Hope

A resident of the Joseph House Workshop is shown tending to the garden that was planted last spring. They call it the "Garden of Hope." A variety of fruits and vegetables were planted: corn, tomatoes, squash, melons, peppers, beans, cucumbers, peas, and carrots. And some marigolds as well.

The men of the Workshop collaborated on this project and have been harvesting throughout the summer. We appreciate very much how their labor has brought forth the beauty of creation.

Surprise Party

Mother Superior Sr. Connie Ladd turned 70 on July 16. We celebrated her birthday with a surprise party on July18. When she arrived at the church hall of St. Francis de Sales in Salisbury, her friends and family were waiting to help her rejoice in the wonderful gift of life.

May our good and gracious God continue to shower His blessings upon Sr. Connie!

Sr. Connie with our secretary, Beth, and bookkeeper, Ella, who organized the party.

A big surprise for Sr. Connie was the arrival of her son and his family, who live in Texas.
