Most volunteers work one day per week.
Financial Assistance Interviewer
- Interview people requesting financial help
(rent, utilities, etc.)
- Assess the situation and make recommendations to the
supervisor
- Be a consoling and compassionate presence to people in
crisis
- Encourage people to make positive changes in their lives
when necessary
- Requires good listening and people skills
Food Pantry Worker
- Help prepare and distribute grocery bags of food
- Unload shipments of food and restock pantry shelves
- May require some light to moderate lifting, but not
absolutely necessary in order to work here
Food Line Interviewer
- Sign in people requesting help from the Food Pantry
- Determine eligibility to receive assistance
- Help people with paperwork and forms when necessary
- Requires good people skills (lines are sometimes long)
Front Desk Worker
- Sign in people seeking financial assistance and assist
with other intake procedures
- Retrieve files and make new files when needed
- Answer telephone, take messages, inform callers of Center procedures and policies
- Requires good communication skills
Hospitality Room Assistant
- Greet men and women entering Hospitality Room (day
shelter for the homeless)
- Help prepare simple meals and snacks
- Assist with laundry and shower facilities
- Be a supportive and listening presence
- Help people on an individual basis
- Hospitality Room is open Monday through Friday

Joseph House Workshop Boundary Street

Seminar Presenter
- Present a seminar on a topic that will help the
residents of the Workshop to re-enter the job market
- Topics may cover job search skills, money
management/budgeting, communication skills, personal
development and growth, etc.
- Share your field of interest and expertise
- Seminars are 1-2 hours in length, presented occasionally
throughout the year
Job Counselor
- Assist residents in their search for employment
- Help identify their areas of interest, ability, and
growth
- Assist with resumes and job applications
- Maintain contacts with local businesses and other
sources of employment
- May also help clients from Joseph House Crisis Center
Mentor
- Be a companion to Workshop residents
- Offer one-to-one support, encouragement, guidance

Hours: Monday through Friday, 9 am to 4 pm
Most volunteers work a morning or evening shift one day
per week.
Front Desk Receptionist
- Answer the door and telephone at the convent of the
Little Sisters of Jesus and Mary
- Respond to calls from clients, volunteers, benefactors,
businesses
- Light clerical and miscellaneous work as needed
Newsletter Mailing
- Assist with preparation of the Joseph House Newsletter
mailing
- Insert reply envelopes into folded newsletters and seal
with stickers
- Takes place each month, the Friday evening before the
second Tuesday of the month

Representative Payee
- Assist individuals on a one-to-one basis with budgeting
and money management
- Contact creditors when necessary to make arrangements
for the payment of bills
- Write checks from the client's account for payment of
bills, take checks to convent for signatures
Good Neighbor
- Accompany Sisters and other volunteers on home visits to
the needy
- Deliver groceries, prescriptions, and other items
- Assist with general care and light housekeeping when
needed
- Be a comforting presence to the homebound

Resident Volunteers 411 North Poplar Hill Avenue
Salisbury, Maryland
full-time position
Men and women age 21 years and older can be resident
volunteers. These volunteers share in the ministry and
community life of the Little Sisters of Jesus and Mary.
They receive room and board, a small stipend, and
medical insurance. Volunteers may be single, married,
widowed, or divorced (they cannot have the care of
dependent children). Catholic religious are also
welcome.
Applicants should be practicing Christians. Previous
work and volunteer experience are helpful. All gifts and
skills can be used. Resident volunteers live in
community with other volunteers and/or religious. The
normal term of service is one year, although this can be
extended.
A completed application, references, and personal
interview are required.
